What is surgical orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics couples orthodontic treatment with surgical procedures to extend the range of treatment options available. Working in conjunction with a maxillo facial surgeon we can reshape your jaw, provide facial symmetry and improve your ability to chew, speak or breathe. Straightening your jaw can also improve your overall facial appearance. When your jaws are moved, it also moves your teeth, so we always perform surgical orthodontics in conjunction with braces treatment. That way, your teeth will be in the proper position after we reshape your jaws.

Who can benefit from surgical orthodontics?

If you have difficulty chewing, talking, or sleeping, you might benefit from corrective jaw surgery. We can treat and correct abnormalities in your jaws and teeth to help resolve any issues you may be having.

With the latest advances in orthodontics, jaw surgery may be unnecessary. We may be able to treat your smile with orthodontics alone, but we will need to assess your smile at our practice to know for sure. We always try to be as non-invasive as possible, so we will only recommend orthognathic surgery if we think it is best for you.

How does orthognathic surgery work?

If Dr Hoey determines that orthognathic surgery is best, we will get you started with braces treatment. This treatment will usually last between 6-18 months.

As your teeth begin to move, you may think that your bite is getting worse rather than better. However, when your jaws are placed into proper alignment during surgery, the teeth will then fit into the correct positions.

When it is time for your surgery, you will be in the care of an oral surgeon at the hospital. The surgery can take several hours, depending on your specific case. Surgery is performed in the hospital with an oral surgeon, and can take several hours, depending on the amount and type of surgery needed.

We can adjust your lower jaw, upper jaw, or both. Certain movements may require the jaws to be separated, with bone added or removed to achieve the proper alignment and function. We may use other facial bones to help contribute to that alignment.

You should be able to return to school or work within two weeks of your surgery. After your mouth has about 4-8 weeks to heal, Dr Hoey will use your braces to fine-tune your smile. Usually, we will be able to remove your braces within 6 to 12 months after surgery. Then, all you will need to do is wear a retainer to keep your beautiful new smile.
